Sitting Area

The "Virtual Worlds" interest group is to meet here, you are told. As you seat yourself, you see a couple of pamphlets and an interesting list. Hmm...

"Virtual World or Game, Teaching and Learning" proclaims it is now part of Hirumi's text, pages 382-391. It is worth up to 10 XPs when entered as "Virtual World or Game" (subject) under the Pilgrimage topic, Discussion Tab, on ones Adventurer's Log.

The second pamphlet says "Resources and Implementation Issues for Virtual Worlds," Hirumi, pages 391-398. (Starts with "Instructional Resources" and ends just before "Future Directions.") Worth up to 5 XPs, it should have the subject "Resources and Implementation-VW" under the topic Pilgrimages on the Discussion tab of one's Adventurer Log.

As you gaze into the fireplace, you see the video "fires." ResEd.org (http://rezedhub.ning.com/) is a ning about virtual worlds. There is a short video (http://rezedhub.ning.com/video/rezed-a-90-second-overview) introducing RezEd. Your write up (subject "RezEd), under the Pilgrimage topic, Discussion Tab, Adventurer Log, should include the video and some material from the site.

WJU Lunar Games, http://rezedhub.ning.com/video/21111-mountain-state-science, is another flame in the fireplace that discusses using virtual worlds to teach. One of the projects mentioned is found at http://moonworld.cet.edu/, with connectivity to Second Life. Write up "WJU Lunar Games" (subject) under the topic Pilgrimages, Discussion Tab, Adventurer's Log for up to 10 XPs.

If you explore MoonWorld, it can be written up as "Moon World" (subject) under the Quest Topic, Discussion Tab, Adventurer's Log, for up to 10 XPs.

The list you first saw with the pamphlets (above) noted Quest Options for Virtual Worlds (up to 5 XPs each for up to 3 Quests). Write ups should use the name of the virtual world as the subject, under the Quests topic, Discussion Tab, Adventurer's Log.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Most of these virtual worlds do not have immediate educational applications that are likely to apply to your classroom. If you wish to work in these areas, you will need to arrange to meet your students in the virtual world at a particular time and place. In some cases you may be able to arrange assignments within the Virtual World. In other cases, you may just be able to discuss assignments - using the virtual world as an enticement and practice for communication skills. Experiment with the virtual worlds. Some have limiters in terms of how broadly you can communicate with one another.
